Our quantum journey continues!
Building on the momentum of Quantum Special Interest Group’s (QSPIN) recent establishment, the group’s second meetup took a deep dive into the question: “What Really is Quantum Computing?”
Held last August 25 at G101 Gokongwei Hall, the session introduced participants to the foundations of quantum computing. Heading the session was Mr. Dylan Josh Lopez, a part-time instructor from the Department of Computer Technology who handles the College of Computer Studies’ Quantum Computing elective.
Together with student assistants Kyle Carlo Lasala (V, BSMSCS) and Roan Campo (IV, BSMSCS), Mr. Lopez guided the participants in exploring the historical transition from Quantum 1.0 to Quantum 2.0, the technological shift from passively harnessing groups of sub-atomic particles and photons to individually isolating and engineering these quantum particles to harness quantum phenomena.
The discussion also covered the four core pillars of quantum technology, including sensing, communication, computing, and simulation, shedding insight into new opportunities for innovation and Computer Science research in the field.
Following the session, the meetup concluded with the election of the group’s provisional Executive Committee to lead future initiatives, marking another step in building the university’s growing quantum community.
Looking ahead, the group aims to conduct group study sessions where members can go beyond the introductory concepts and unpack the mathematics behind quantum information theory.
The group extends its gratitude to QSPIN adviser Roger Luis Uy for organizing the event, and to the Advanced Research Institute for Informatics, Computing, and Networking (AdRIC), under Dr. Joel Ilao, for sponsoring the activity and for continuous support.
Thank you to everyone who joined us! Here’s to more learning, collaboration, and quantum exploration ahead.
